Neural Network to Broadcast Chess Games Live During World Championship Match 2023 in Kazakhstan

April 10, 2023 by pressster

From April 7th to May 1st, 2023, the World Chess Championship Match is held in Astana, Kazakhstan. This year, for the first time, the additional events of the Match will be recognized and live-streamed using a neural network platform.

In the Match, the second-ranked player in the world, Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi, faces off against the third-ranked grandmaster, Ding Liren from China. The latter earned the right to play after the reigning world champion, Magnus Carlsen, decided not to defend his title. The match will consist of 14 games with a time control of 120, 60, and 15 minutes for the first 40 moves, next 20 moves, and remaining moves, respectively, with an additional 30 seconds per move starting from move 61. In case of a tie, the opponents will play a rapid playoff. The prize fund for the Match will be 2 million euros.

Several chess events will be held during the Match in Kazakhstan, with some of them broadcast live via the idChess mobile app. idChess uses neural networks trained on millions of chess games and features a “virtual referee” VAR (Video Assistant Referee) function that allows resolving contentious moments in the game. Neural networks will recognize and broadcast chess in real-time at the Kazakhstan Children’s Cup from April 9th to 16th.

idChess is an intellectual platform for recognizing and livestreaming chess games, which has made chess tournament streaming available to a wide audience. The mobile application uses artificial intelligence technologies to recognize moves and record them in chess notation. Tournament organizers use the tournament version of idChess to broadcast competitions.
